Watch out beachgoers, just in time for summer, “Giant’s Anthem X 29er goes on a Diet.” Recently, the Wrecking Crew at Mountain Bike Action magazine was invited to Westlake Village, CA, to spend some quality time with Giant’s new 2013 Anthem X Advanced 29er as well as the 2013 Anthem X 29er W. After many hours on the famed Backbone Trail they were impressed with the ride and the editors download their experience in the August issue: “We were glad to find that by making the bike into a featherweight, it doesn’t give up any of its willingness to charge down rough sections at full speed.” They were also impressed with the latest Liv/giant offering in the Anthem X 29er W: “…a first of its kind, offering full suspension and 29-inch wheels in a women’s-specific platform.”

Not only did the Wrecking Crew get a sneak preview but they also got some lessons from the pros: “Carl Decker is a rider who knows how to make any section of trail flow. Following his line down descents we’ve done countless times, it opened our eyes to new ways of looking at the trail.”  Find more information from the 2013 Anthem X Advanced 29er review on the Giant USA Website. Two States of Riding

This morning a handful of us headed out to Platte River State Park to get some riding in before 9am cut off time. 

Later in the day couple of us headed over to Iowa and rode the trails at Lewis & Clark. Little bit of a drive, but always a pretty fun track!

Letter, 7/3: Approve protected bike lanes

Protected bicycle lanes (cycle tracks) as proposed for N Street in the Downtown Master Plan are a great idea for many reasons. These lanes have had great success in other cities across the globe. They have been shown to be safe (28 percent lower injury rate in Montreal per a study from Harvard and about a 50 percent reduction in accidents for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists in New York City), effective (increases bicycle traffic and reduces automobile congestion), and may actually help alleviate parking shortages even with the loss of numerous parking spots by encouraging folks to ride downtown versus drive an automobile.

Also, these lanes will provide a safe route out of traffic for those not comfortable riding the on-street bicycle lanes, such as families with children.

Downtown Lincoln needs a safe east/west bicycle route. N Street is ideal because it is unidirectional and is wide enough to accommodate a protected bicycle lane with minimal loss of on-street parking. Lincoln has been gaining national recognition as a bicycle-friendly city. Protected bicycle lanes may help attract and maintain an active and vibrant demographic.

I urge the City Council to approve the proposed protected bicycle lane in the Downtown Master Plan on July 9.

FREE RECEPTION AND SCREENING

Saturday, July 7 - Reception 1:00 p.m. / Screening 2:30 p.m.Screen Ink. presents a free screening of Bicycle Thieves in conjunction with their annual Biiklops Poster Show. 

Noon - You are invited to meet up at Screen Ink for a bike ride around downtown and on nearby trails. 

1:00 p.m. - Enjoy a free reception at the Ross which includes refreshments and delicious food from Pepe's Bistro. During the reception there will be speakers representing Great Plains Trails Network, Bicyclincoln and the Lincoln Bike Kitchen. 

2:30 p.m. - Free screening of Bicycle Thieves. After the film Modern Monks will be hosting a special Biiklops Happy Hour from 4-6pm with discounted beers for your drinking pleasure.
